Surrounded by sprawling national forests in the northern part of the state, the city of Redding, CA, is an excellent base for water sports enthusiasts searching for the best destinations to go boating, kayaking, or canoeing. If you are searching for new places to explore in your new 2022 Chevrolet Equinox, here are three fantastic spots you should not miss.

1. Shasta Lake

Created with the impounding of the Sacramento River in 1944, Shasta Lake is an important part of a flood control system for the Sacramento Valley, as well as a well-known public recreation area that attracts visitors from all over the state each year. Covering a surface area of about 30,000 acres, this body of water is located within the Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area.

Featuring several different marinas, public boat ramps, fishing piers, and boat rental shops, Shasta Lake is a place where you can easily spend an entire weekend enjoying your favorite water activities. This expansive body of water is located a little under 20 miles north of the Redding city center and can be reached in just 20 minutes by car via route I-5.

2. Whiskeytown Lake

A popular recreational destination featuring swimming areas, public boat launches, and fishing spots, Whiskeytown Lake is an artificial reservoir created with the construction of Whiskeytown Dam in the early 1960s. Covering a surface area of a little under 3,500 acres, this body of water is fed by the Trinity River and a tributary of the upper Sacramento River.

Although there are several parks and recreation spots spread around lake, the most popular one is Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. Located on the eastern shores and just eight miles west of the Redding city center, this place can be reached in less than 15 minutes by car, making it a great spot for a day trip or a weekend escape. Some of the amenities you will find here include boat launches, large family campgrounds, and several miles of hiking and biking trails.

3. Lake Almanor

Created primarily for hydroelectricity production purposes, Lake Almanor is another sprawling body of water that offers excellent opportunities for boaters, anglers, and water sports enthusiasts from all over northern California. Located about 95 miles east of downtown Redding, this lake can be reached in less than two hours via route CA-36. Some of the amenities you will find around its shores include boat ramps, picnic spots, and community gardens.
